【神代杉工芸を始めた経緯】How I started Jindai

私の両親は当時長谷川建具工芸を営んでおりました。神代杉は貴重な物であり、当時では情報もなく入手が非常に困難で、自身で比較的安価な米杉を神代色に着色する技術を開発、特許を取得し雪見障子の組子等に取り入れ内閣通産大臣賞を受賞。父はそれでも尚且つ神代杉の魅力にひかれ様々な方法で神代杉に関わる情報収集に没頭する日々でした。
その折、秋田県の方から神代杉がダム工事中に発見されたとの報告を受け秋田県仁賀保町の採掘現場まで出向き、偶然大量に発掘された神代杉、神代欅に一目で魅了され大型の10t車3杯分を全て買取り本格的に神代杉を主力とした木工芸を始めました。
社長の座を長男の英男に託して、本格的な作家の道を独学で学び父は工芸家として幾多の功績を残してきました。
その様な最中、兄英男を交通事故で亡くし後継者がいなくなりました。
私は、長らくサラリーマンとして勤務いたしておりましたが、幼少期から父より技術を学び習得していたため、技術を継承できるのは、私しかいない。今行動に移さなければ、誰がやるのだとの想いから早期退職を決意し木工芸を始めました。

My parents ran Hasegawa Joinery Crafts at the time. Jindai cedar is a precious material, and there was a lack of information about it at the time, making it very difficult to obtain, so he developed a technique for coloring relatively inexpensive American cedar in Jindai color, obtained a patent, and incorporated it into kumiko latticework for Shoji with a glass bottom half for snow  viewing, which won him the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award. My father was still drawn to the charm of Jindai cedar, and spent his days immersed in gathering information about it in various ways.
At that time, he received a report from someone in Akita Prefecture that Jindai cedar had been discovered during dam construction work, so he went to the mining site in Nikaho Town, Akita Prefecture, and was immediately captivated by the large amount of Jindai cedar and Jindai Zelkova that had been unearthed by chance. He bought three 10-ton truckloads full of them, and began woodworking in earnest, focusing mainly on Jindai cedar.
